Pensioner charged with sex crimes

A pensioner appeared in court in Limerick yesterday charged with multiple counts of indecent assault and rape. The Limerick man - who cannot be named - is facing 45 charges of indecent assault and five counts of rape of a female relative on dates between 1972 and 1982.

There was no Garda objection to bail on condition that the 67-year-old defendant agreed to stay away from the alleged victim.

Judge Tom O'Donnell granted bail of €500. The case was adjourned until September 25th.

Attacker offers €20,000 to pair

A reformed drug addict has offered two women he robbed at knife-point €10,000 compensation each after receiving an award from the Residential Institutions Redress Board for "horrific" abuse suffered as a child.

Stephen Byrne (30), of Mariners Port, Sheriff Street Lower, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to robbery at Sheriff Street on March 14th, 2007, and at Clarion Quay on March 18th, 2007. Judge Katherine Delahunt adjourned sentencing to allow a probation report be prepared and for the compensation to be raised with the women.

Five years in jail for storing heroin

A city centre drug addict who stored €80,000 worth of heroin in his home in return for €150 has been given a five-year sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Dominic Bonny (27) of Lower Sherrard Street pleaded guilty to possessing over 400 grams of the drug at his home on November 3rd, 2007.

Judge Patrick McCarten suspended the final two years of the sentence.

Judge McCarten noted his co-operation with gardaí and his early guilty plea. He said Bonny's role was "a minor but essential one" and "five years reflects the seriousness of the offence".

Cocaine stored in coal bunker

A Swords resident faces a possible 10 years' imprisonment when he is sentenced next week at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for storing cocaine valued at over €22,000 in a coal bunker at his family home.

Karl Barker (22), who has 49 previous convictions, pleaded guilty to possession of the drugs at his home on March 22nd, 2007.
