Man (24) banned from Wexford town

A young man has been banned from Wexford town for two years.

Wayne Moran (24), Ardmore Park, Ballybeg, Waterford, appeared before Wexford District Court yesterday, charged with being drunk on Wexford's Main Street last Saturday, July 26th.

Judge Donnchadh Ó Búachalla, noting a "substantial number of previous convictions", convicted Moran of public drunkenness and fined him €500.

He also ordered him to enter a probation bond for two years, during which time he is to stay out of Wexford town entirely. If he has a particular reason to visit the town he is to notify gardaí in advance.

86-year-old man killed in horse-and-trap accident

An 86-year-old man has died after the horse-and-trap he was driving overturned when it struck a wall.

Seán Hanrahan, The Green, Fethard, Co Tipperary, died in hospital shortly after the accident at Rocklow Road in Fethard at about 2pm on Sunday.

Mr Hanrahan was described by locals as a popular character in the Fethard area. It is understood the horse-drawn vehicle, with Mr Hanrahan the sole occupant, went out of control and hit a wall. Gardaí at Clonmel are investigating the incident.

Council worker dies in graveyard fall

A 51-year-old Limerick City Council worker died yesterday in an accident in a graveyard.

Martin Duhig, St Mary's Park, Limerick, slipped and fell shortly after 9am while carrying out work at Mount St Oliver Cemetery in Limerick. The father of two was rushed to St John's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Mr Duhig had worked for Limerick City Council for over 20 years where he was attached to the cemeteries section of the environment department.

It is understood he suffered a fatal head injury.

Funeral today of Irish Iraq veteran

An Irish soldier killed in an accident in Alaska earlier this month will be buried today.

The body of Limerick-born US soldier Edward Byrnes was flown home last weekend.

The 36-year-old, who was a first class private with the Engineer Battalion in Iraq, died on July 11th last in Anchorage, Alaska, when he fell 12m (40ft) from a bridge.

Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea is due to attend Mr Byrnes's funeral Mass which takes place at St Brigid's Church, Limerick, today.

Local police say they are treating the death as accidental. One theory was that Mr Byrnes may have underestimated the height of the bridge and jumped to retrieve his fallen hat.
