Tribunal gives hotel waitress €29,000

A Co Offaly hotel waitress who claimed she was subjected to consistent bad language and bullying has been awarded €29,000 in compensation by an Employment Appeals Tribunal, writes Andrew Bushe.

The tribunal found that Kathleen O'Dea, Ballincur, Kinnitty, Birr, was unfairly dismissed by the Kinnitty Hotel in Birr.

The hotel did not appear at the hearing involving the claim in Tullamore on July 2nd, the tribunal said yesterday.

It said the loss of Ms O'Dea's job "had taken such a toll on her confidence that she had not been able to seek other employment".

On the basis of her uncontradicted evidence, the tribunal found Ms O'Dea was unfairly dismissed and awarded her €29,000.

Plans for €500m project in Mallow

Work has started on a plan for a €500 million redevelopment of the former sugar plant at Mallow, north Cork, writes Michelle McDonagh.

Greencore has begun preparation for the plan for the Mallow West project which is modelled on Citywest in Dublin.

It is the single largest integrated project ever proposed for north Cork. The developers hope to start construction next year.

The development on Greencore's 398-acre site is expected to create 1,000 new jobs in the enterprise, technology and commercial sectors.

The project will also include mixed sport and recreational amenities on 149 acres, the provision of a 45-acre wildlife area and the development of over 1,000 residential units.

2,000 expected at pony show

More than 2,000 people are expected to attend the 83rd Connemara Pony Show which takes place today in Clifden, Co Galway, writes Armelle Loiseau.

On show will be some 550 ponies from Ireland and 15 other countries, including the US, Germany and Canada. A pony sale will take place at Clifden mart from 11am to 7pm tomorrow.

The Connemara Pony Breeders' Society is working on a project aiming at providing information on every Connemara pony in Ireland. This will be available this autumn on the society's website, www. connemarapony.org
