Colombia's top drugs lord captured

BOGOTA - Colombia's top drugs lord, known as the "boss of bosses" for smuggling hundreds of tonnes of cocaine to the United States, was captured yesterday in the country's biggest narcotics arrest in years.

Diego Montoya, also called "Don Diego", was on the FBI's ten most wanted list and had a $5 million (€3.6 million) price on his head. Colombia's Das intelligence agency said the army caught Montoya in the west of the country but gave no more details. - (Reuters)

Actress Jane Wyman dies

Jane Wyman, the Oscar-winning Hollywood actress who was Ronald Reagan's first wife and went on to star on the popular 1980s television drama Falcon Crest, died yesterday aged 93.

Wyman, who married fellow actor and future US President Reagan in 1940, but divorced him in 1948, died at her home in Rancho Mirage, California.

Beginning her career as a radio singer, the Missouri-born Wyman made her first film appearance as a chorus dancer in the 1935 musical King of Burlesque and signed with Warner Bros. studio the following year. Her film acting debut came with a bit part in Gold Diggers of 1937.

She gained notice in 1945 for her role as the girlfriend of a chronic alcoholic in Billy Wilder's drama The Lost Weekend.

SA police fire at protesters

CAPE TOWN - Seven protesters were charged with public violence yesterday after South African police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets to break up a demonstration on a main Cape Town highway, police said.

Demonstrators burnt tyres and stoned cars early yesterday to protest against government failure to provide basic amenities. - (Reuters)
