Two in court over injuries to gardai
Two men are due to appear before Cloverhill District court next week in relation to an incident in Dublin early yesterday in which three gardaí were injured.
Carl Cullen (20), Dingle Road, Cabra, and his cousin Paul Cullen (30), Fassaugh Avenue, Cabra, are facing six charges between them relating to the incident, which happened shortly after 1am.
Dublin District Court Judge Cormac Dunne heard that they wished to have any CCTV footage connected to the case retained.
Carl Cullen is facing four charges, two of which relate to assault causing harm, with one each relating to possession of a weapon and obstructing a Garda officer.
Paul Cullen is facing two charges, one of assault causing harm and another relating to possession of a weapon. The court also heard that two bench warrants were outstanding against him.
Judge Dunne remanded them into custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court next Wednesday.
Offaly man not guilty of rape
An Offaly farmer has been found not guilty of raping and sexually assaulting a teenager three years ago.
The 56-year-old man had pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to raping and sexually assaulting the then 16-year- old girl in April 2004.
Man convicted of cocaine possession
A Dublin man has been convicted of having cocaine worth €70,000. Stephen Proudfoot (26), Moatview Drive, Coolock, was found guilty by a jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court of having cocaine with intent to supply it.
John Joyce (28), Grove Park, Malahide Road, Coolock, was found not guilty. Judge Tony Hunt remanded Proudfoot in custody for sentence.
Rape trial goes on in accused's absence
The trial of a man with an address in Meath accused of raping and falsely imprisoning a woman has continued in his absence at the Central Criminal Court.
Mr Justice Barry White told the jury of nine men and three women that the 38-year-old accused man had failed to attend court since Wednesday.
Mr Justice White warned the jury that it should not take any inference against him from the fact that he had not appeared as he was still entitled to a presumption of innocence.
The accused, from Lithuania, denies raping the woman, from Latvia, on March 11th, 2006.
He also denies falsely imprisoning her and threatening to kill her on the same date in both Cavan and Meath.
The trial continues on Monday.
Man dies in Monaghan crash
A man was killed in a two-car collision four miles outside Monaghan town yesterday evening. The man, the driver of a red Opal Corsa, died at the scene after his vehicle collided with a Northern Ireland registered silver Mercedes at a spot known as Castleshane Hollow.
Two fire engines and a rescue vehicle from Monaghan were rushed to the scene along with two ambulances. A passenger in the Opal was injured but it is believed that the driver of the Mercedes was uninjured.
It is believed the man who died was from the nearby Cremartin area.
