Man stabbed to death in Dublin
A man in his early 30s was stabbed to death in Walkinstown, Dublin, last night.
The fatal stabbing took place in a laneway off Beechfield Road at about 9pm. He was taken to St James's Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.
Restaurant case is adjourned
A case in which a receiver has been appointed to a restaurant run by Marcus Sweeney was adjourned yesterday in the High Court.
Bank of Scotland Ireland (BoSI) had sent in the receiver, George Maloney, at the end of last month to Il Pomo D'Oro on South William Street, Dublin.
In the High Court on November 30th last, the bank and the restaurant agreed it could continue to be run by the receiver as a going concern pending the outcome of further court proceedings.
The case was mentioned at the High Court yesterday and adjourned to December 21st.
Man who stabbed passerby jailed
An alcoholic who drunkenly stabbed a passerby and then tried to slash the tyres on a taxi so he could not escape has been given a three-year sentence in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Gavin Guinan (30), Lissadel Road, Drimnagh, Dublin, pleaded guilty to assaulting Darren Ward causing him serious harm on September 25th, 2005.
Judge Desmond Hogan suspended the final two years on condition Guinan takes part in an alcohol treatment programme.
16-year-old on drugs charge
A 16-year-old youth was brought before the Children's Court yesterday charged in connection with a drugs seizure worth €150,000 in Dublin last weekend. The youth was charged with possessing a quantity of heroin for sale or supply to another at Neilstown Drive, Clondalkin, Dublin, on Sunday. He was remanded in custody to St Patrick's Institution to appear again next week.
Youth had drugs worth €42,000
A 17-year-old youth, who had about €42,000 worth of cocaine and cannabis stored in a shed at his home, has been remanded on bail by the Dublin Children's Court.
The teenager from south Dublin, was yesterday charged under Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act with possessing a quantity of cocaine and cannabis, for sale or supply, at his home address, on June 22nd last. He was also charged under Section 15A of the Misuse of Drugs Act for possessing cocaine worth over €13,000 for sale or supply which on conviction can carry a minimum mandatory sentence of between 10 years and life. He was remanded on bail to appear again next month.
Man drowned after night out
An inquest has heard that a young man who was planning to move to Longford with his wife to start a family drowned after he went swimming in Sutton, Co Dublin, following a night out.
An early morning walker found the body of Shane McGuigan (35), Moyclare Close, Baldoyle, Co Dublin, on Burrow Beach, Sutton shortly after 8am on January 20th, 2007.
Power outages in two Dublin areas
More than 2,000 homes in Dublin were left without electricity last night as a result of two separate faults.
An ESB spokesman said that about 2,000 homes in the Dundrum/Ballinteer area lost power as a result of a fault in a 10,000 volt cable.
He said that most homes in the area had electricity restored last night.
Meanwhile, several hundred homes in the Phoenix Park/Stoneybatter area were left without electricity as a result of a a separate fault.
