New Palestinian delegate to Ireland
Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern yesterday met the new delegate general to Ireland of the Palestinian Authority, Dr Hikmat Izzat Ajjuri. The Minister said he hoped his stay would see a further strengthening of the close links between the Government and the Authority and between the Irish and Palestinian people.
The two men discussed the Middle East peace process and the upcoming Palestinian legislative elections. Mr Ahern is said to have emphasised that it was essential for all parties to maintain their commitment to working for a lasting settlement based on the peaceful coexistence of two viable states.
He looked forward to a further increase in the coming years in Ireland's assistance to the Authority, which was more than €4 million last year.

Budget says it will not withdraw ads
Tour operator Budget Travel says it will not withdraw advertisements that have been the subject of a complaint by rival company Panorama Holidays. Panorama said yesterday it had complained about the "misleading" advertisements to the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland, the Consumers Association of Ireland and the director of consumer affairs.
It claimed the ads featured incorrect price comparisons between Budget's holidays and those offered by Panorama. "In addition, Panorama Holidays is not currently adding a fuel supplement to its holidays, a claim that Budget Travel is also making about it."
It said Budget was quoting prices from Panorama's summer 2006 "edition one" brochure from last July, rather than the "edition two" brochure now on sale.
A spokesman for Budget said it had carefully identified the basis on which it had made its price comparisons and there was no question of withdrawing the advertisements.

Canon Haskins's sit-out began on December 17th and ended on Christmas Eve. The canon said he was "extremely grateful for the wonderful generosity of the people of Dublin" and thanked, in particular, RTÉ's Charlie Bird "for having us as his nominated charity on the Joe Duffy Christmas Eve show". He also thanked parishioners who provided back-up throughout.
