Trips overseas by Irish residents have increased by almost 100,000 since last year according to the Central Statistics Office.

Statistics released today reveal there were 586,700 trips abroad made by Irish residents in March this year compared with 488,900 in the same month last year.

The data was collected via interview at a number of airports and ports around the country.

Between March 2005 and March 2007 the number of trips made by Irish residents overseas has risen by more than 130,000 from 456,100 to 586,700. The number of incoming trips to the country rose by 55,000 in the same period.

Trips to Ireland by residents of the United Kingdom fell by 6,800 between March 2006 and March 2007 from 296,100 to 289,300.

In the same period there was an increase in the number of trips to Ireland by residents of other European countries of 51,800.

Trips from the United States to Ireland increased by 3,800 in the year, while trips into Ireland from other areas increased by 5,300.
