India has rejected a Pakistani proposal for the region to denuclearise by saying its atomic programme was not aimed at Pakistan.
"Pakistan had suggested the denuclearisation of South Asia, which is not acceptable to us," Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee told the lower house of parliament today.
"Pakistan's nuclear programme is India-specific, but our own nuclear programme goes beyond that," he said. "Our concern is about other nations".
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said last Sunday that if the dispute with India over Kashmir were resolved "and there is peace and security in the region, South Asia could be denuclearised, mutually by India and Pakistan".
