Indian troops have killed five Muslim rebels and two unarmed men who tried to enter from the Pakistani zone of Kashmir, officials said today.

Two foreigners, believed to be members of Kashmir's dominant rebel group Hizbul Mujahedin, were killed overnight in the Kalaroos sector of the northern Kupwara district, an army spokesman said.

The spokesman said three more rebels were killed in the Keran sector of the same district when they tried to cross from Pakistani territory.

Indian border guards overnight killed two unarmed people, believed to be Bangladeshis, when they tried to cross from Pakistani territory in the southern Jammu region, officials said.
