An Indian civilian was killed and another injured on Thursday when a Government air force fighter crashed into a residential area in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The MiG-21 was on a training flight when it crashed in Lalpora village in Budgam district, 35 km (20 miles) southwest of the state's summer capital, Srinagar, the official said.
Officials said the crash was not connected with the 13-year-old rebellion against New Delhi's rule in the disputed Himalayan region. "The MiG crashed due to a technical snag. But the pilot ejected safely," the official said.
"The owner of the house died on the spot and his son has been critically wounded." India's air force, the world's fourth largest, has come under fire for the MiGs' woeful safety record. Defence officials say at least 170 MiGs have been lost in accidents in the past decade.
