The death toll from a bus crash in Indian Kashmir rose to 42 today as a number of those injured died overnight.

At least 40 others, including six children, remain in hospitals, and police said the death toll from yesterday's accident would likely climb as several of the injured were in a critical condition.

The crash occurred when the steering locked and brakes failed on the bus, resulting in it veering off a road and plunging into a 400-feet gorge.

"There were at least 85 passengers in the bus which had a capacity for 50," a police officer said. "Many people were sitting on the roof."
