Indian troops killed three Islamic rebels in Kashmir in a four-hour gunbattle at a suspected militant hideout.
The suspected members of the pro-Pakistani al-Badr were killed after soldiers from the paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) attacked them near Tral, south of Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar.
"On being asked to surrender they [the militants] opened fire, which was returned effectively killing three militants," a BSF spokesman said, adding the encounter ended after four hours.
More than 37,500 people have died in the Himalayan province since the eruption of an Islamic revolt against Indian rule in 1989. Separatists put the toll twice as high.
