AN Impotence Information Bureau has been launched to help combat a "secret" problem which affects the sex lives of about 120,000 men in Ireland.

A confidential telephone line has been set up for those who wish to find out more about erectile dysfunction, its causes and how to get help. The line was initiated yesterday.

Erectile dysfunction is the term used to describe a prolonged difficulty in getting or maintaining an erection. The bureau will also promote general awareness of the problem, to move beyond the snigger factor" normally associated with it. At present most men who suffer from this problem do not seek help.

Mr Ted McDermott, consultant urologist at the Meath Hospital, said the initiative would be beneficial to patients.

"My concern, as someone who treats this problem, is that sufferers should know that they are not alone because there are many others like them. My advice is to talk openly to their partner and then visit their GP for further consultation. It is important to remember that, in most cases, treatment is available," said Mr McDermott.

The bureau is founded by a pharmaceutical company, Pharmacia and Upjohn, as part of its programme of supporting human health issues.

Those who call the telephoned line can listen to information about impotence and leave their name and address to receive further information. The number is 1570 111 838. Calls are charged at £1 per minute.
