Newport - Investigators said yesterday they would continue to scrutinise the cockpit voice recorder from EgyptAir Flight 990, after a preliminary review showed that neither a hijacking nor pilot suicide apparently caused the aircraft to crash.

"No conclusions could be drawn from the initial review," the National Transportation Safety Board chairman said in a statement on Sunday. According to US news reports, the tape shows that the pilots, speaking calmly in Arabic, were trying to resolve a problem in the cockpit when an alarm sounded, and the situation worsened.
