A DUBLIN man suffering from brain damage who will require nursing for the rest of his life is to be paid £750,000 and costs in settlement of a High Court action yesterday.

The settlement was approved by Mr Justice Johnson following out-of-court discussions.

Mr Donal McDonagh (29), of Larkfield Grove, Harold's Cross, Dublin, had taken the action against Ms Sheila Maguire, representing the interests of Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, and consultants, Mr Christopher Pidgeon, Mr John Phillips, Mr Kamouleedeen Sayat and Mr Oisin O'Neill. The settlement was without admission of liability.

When he was six years old, Mr McDonagh had a haemorrhage followed by hydrocephalus and a shunt was inserted. From April 1989, a series of revisions of the shunt were performed. In July 1990, he developed septicaemia and meningitis.
