A number of people were being treated for injuries, none of them serious, in hospital last night following a protest meeting about car thieves in Killinarden, west Dublin.

Some 350 people attended the meeting during which two young boys and a teenager admitted being involved in car-stealing and apologised for their actions. After the meeting, the protesters marched on the homes of suspected car thieves in the area, all of whom denied the charges. Youths in the Cushlawn Estate threw stones at the protesters and a 14-year-old boy was arrested.

A Garda patrol van was later rammed by a stolen van and a number of people were slightly injured. A man is in custody in Tallaght Garda station for road traffic offences.
