The Leinster and Ireland star has been plagued by ankle problems.

Wallace (31) made his international debut against Japan during the 1995 World Cup and progressed to win 45 caps in the green jersey.

He last played for his county in last year's World Cup qualifier at home to Georgia.

Wallace, whose brothers Richard and David were also full internationals, also represented Irish students, Ireland development Side, Ireland A and captained the Ireland under-21 side.

Leinster coach Matt Williams said: "Paul is the ultimate professional sportsman and will be a loss to the Leinster team. I hope he can continue in the future in coaching or some other capacity with Irish Rugby."
