A teenager who gave birth to a stillborn baby claimed that a third party had attempted to terminate the pregnancy in Nigeria, an inquest heard yesterday. Dublin Coroner’s Court heard that Elizabeth Tulolope (16) attended the Rotunda Hospital on June 3rd, 2010, saying she had not felt the baby moving in a number of days. No heartbeat could be found. Birth was induced on June 9th and the baby boy was stillborn.

Gardaí were alerted when Ms Tulolope told staff her pregnancy had been the result of an assault in Nigeria and that a third party, also in Nigeria, had intervened in an attempt to terminate it. Coroner Dr Brian Farrell said that whatever third-party intervention had taken place, it had not damaged the baby. He returned a verdict of death by natural causes.
