Inquest told criminal proceedings likely

An inquest into the death of a 21-year-old student who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Dundalk has been adjourned

An inquest into the death of a 21-year-old student who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Dundalk has been adjourned. But gardaí believe "criminal proceedings will arise", Dublin City Coroner's Court has heard.

Brendan Leggett, Dowdallshill, Newry Road, Dundalk, sustained life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car which failed to stop in Dundalk at about 3am, after a night out with friends and co-workers last September.

He died on September 14th in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin.

Insp Leo McGinn told the court that the investigation was ongoing and a file had been sent to the DPP. "We should have a decision in the very near future, within a month, from the DPP. I envisage that criminal proceedings will arise," he said.

Robert Leggett told the court that his brother had taken a year out from college but planned to return to his studies.

He was a well-known barman and played football on the local Dowdallshill team.

Following the accident, Dundalk gardaí seized a British-registered vehicle which they believed was involved in the hit-and-run incident.

The inquest will be heard briefly before the court on May 25th, prior to a date being set for a full hearing.
