Two separate investigations are under way today after a schoolgirl was hit by a train in Co Tipperary yesterday.

Two separate investigations are under way today after a schoolgirl was hit by a train in Co Tipperary yesterday.

The child, believed to be 9, was struck on the track near Tipperary town at 7.10pm last night. She was rushed to South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel. It is understood she is being treated in intensive care but the extent of her injuries is unknown.

Gardaí and Irish Rail’s accident investigation unit have opened inquiries into the incident.

A spokeswoman for Irish Rail said there were eight passengers on board the train, which was travelling from Limerick Junction to Waterford and had just left Tipperary station.

They were transferred to their destinations by bus after emergency services moved the schoolgirl from the scene.

The railway line was closed until 11pm, but reopened this morning.
