Human rights watchdog bodies have called on the British government to establish prompt judicial inquiries into four killings investigated by the retired Canadian judge, Mr Justice Peter Cory.
His findings will be delivered to the families of Pat Finucane, Robert Hamill, Rosemary Nelson and Billy Wright by the British government today after a long delay.
The Committee on the Administration of Justice, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Human Rights First and the British-Irish Rights Watch issued a joint statement yesterday saying inquiries could only be effective in allaying public concern "if they are capable of enlisting the support and co-operation of the families concerned, and the confidence of the public".
FG expected to select Mitchell
Fine Gael is expected to choose its foreign affairs spokesman, Mr Gay Mitchell, to be its sole candidate in the Dublin constituency in the European elections.
The party's executive will meet tomorrow to decide how many candidates to put forward. While some party figures favour a two-candidate strategy, most informed sources expect them to run just one.
Mr Mitchell is favourite to win the nomination, which is also contested by barrister and former Dublin South East candidate, Mr Colm Mac Eochaidh, and former party official Ms Katherine Meenan. The selection convention takes place next Monday.
