An investigation is underway following the suicide of a prisoner from south Co Dublin, at Castlereagh Prison, Co Roscommon.

The man (28), from Foxrock, was found hanging in his cell shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday night. He was under special observation watch and his cell was checked every 15 minutes. He was understood to be on remand on an assault charge and was due to appear again in court soon.

The man's identity was not released by the Prisons Service, as it was not policy and was against the family's wishes, as the incident was already "very traumatic". Attempts at resuscitation were made on the man, who was taken to Roscommon General Hospital.

This was the first suicide in custody this year.
