An investigation has been opened into the death yesterday of a 43-year-old man, after he collapsed at Dublin's Store Street Garda station on Tuesday.

A postmortem will be carried out today by the State Pathologist, Prof Marie Cassidy.

According to the Garda Press Office, the man, whose name has not yet been released, but who is confirmed as being from Dublin, was taken to Store Street station on Tuesday evening having been found in an "unco-operative and intoxicated" condition at Dominic Street, Dublin.

He was not placed under arrest.

Gardaí had arrived at Dominic Street at 7.25pm having responded to a call for assistance from the crew of a Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance, after the man had refused their help.

In a statement last night, the Garda Press Office said: "His safety in the public area was a cause of concern which left the Garda members with no alternative but to take him into custody for his own and public safety."

The statement said that upon arriving at Store Street station at 7.41pm, the man appeared to lose consciousness within a few minutes. An attempt was made to revive him at the station before, at 8pm, an ambulance arrived and he was taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment.
