The death of a man while working on the demolition of a tower block in Ballymun at the weekend is being investigated by gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority.

The man, who was in his 40s and from Liverpool, was preparing McDermott Tower for demolition when the accident happened on Saturday.

It is understood he was removing an internal stairway from the building at around 10 a.m. when the incident occurred. He was taken to the Mater Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The demolition of the Ballymun tower blocks is being undertaken by Ballymun Regeneration Ltd, a subsidiary of Dublin City Council, as part of a 10-year programme to build a new town for 30,000 people.

In a statement following the accident, Ballymun Regeneration expressed sympathy with the family and colleagues of the dead man, whose name has not been released. It said the man worked for a sub-contractor to the main demolition contractor.

The statement said emergency services, gardaí and personnel from the HSA and Ballymun Regeneration had all visited the scene and investigations were continuing.

"The Garda and the Health and Safety Authority will continue to investigate the circumstances of this tragic event over the coming days, with the full co-operation of the demolition contractor, John Tinnelly and Sons Ltd, and Ballymun Regeneration Ltd," it added.

Sixteen construction workers were killed on sites in 2004, a drop of one from the previous year. However, the number injured on building sites rose last year by 32 per cent to 1,457.
