Gardaí have begun an investigation into a fire that badly damaged Ireland's only tyre recycling plant in Dromiskin, Co Louth, on Saturday night.
It is the fourth fire at the plant within a year. Last June, four firefighters from Dundalk, as well as three staff with the company, Crumb Rubber, were hospitalised following a fire.
Last week, the Health and Safety Authority confirmed, as a result of an investigation into incidents at the plant, that its special investigations unit had prepared a file which is due to be passed to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the near future.
In relation to this most recent fire, a spokesman for the authority yesterday confirmed an inspector would visit the premises this morning and assess the situation.
A Garda spokesman said: "Our initial investigation would suggest the possibility of accidental damage." The possibility of an electrical fault is being examined.
