Inquiry starts into death of man at meat plant

An investigation was underway last night into the cause of death of a man at a Co Tipperary meat processing plant.

An investigation was underway last night into the cause of death of a man at a Co Tipperary meat processing plant.

The man who died was an employee of Munster Proteins in Cahir. His name has not been released.

It is understood he died after falling into an offal pit in the factory at about 4 p.m. His body was recovered by the local fire brigade and attempts to revive him failed.

He was taken to St Joseph's Hospital, Clonmel, where a post mortem examination will be carried out.

A statement from Munster Proteins said: "We deeply regret the fatal accident which occurred at our factory in Cahir this afternoon."

It added that the cause of the accident was not known and it would not make any further comment until a full investigation was carried out.

Investigations will be made by the Garda and the Health and Safety Authority.

Also yesterday, a man died in a farm accident in Co Louth. It is understood the dead man was a prominent member of the national ploughing association. He was named last night as Tom McDonald.

There have been several industrial accidents so far this year and a protest march took place in Dublin last week to highlight the concerns of workers in the building sector at the high level of death and injury among employees in the construction industry.
