Cork man killed after car hits tree
A man from Cork city died when his car went off the main Cork-Killarney Road just outside Ballyvourney and collided with a tree early yesterday, writes Barry Roche.
The alarm was raised by a motorist. Gardaí found the young man (20) dead in the car. He was taken to Cork University Hospital for a postmortem.
Gardaí believe the crash occurred some time after 2am yesterday and have appealed to anyone who travelled on the N22 in the early hours to contact them in Macroom on 026-41724.
Gardaí search for missing woman
Gardaí in Waterford were last night continuing their attempts to find a woman reported missing on Monday.
Margaret "Meg" Walsh (35), Dunavarra, Ballinakill, was last seen close to her home on Sunday. The alarm was raised when she did not show up for work on Monday. Ms Walsh, described as 5ft 6" tall with blonde shoulder-length hair was last seen wearing a brown V-neck jumper, brown jeans and boots.
ESB restores power in Dublin
About 300 homes and a number of businesses in Sandyford, Co Dublin, were without power for much of yesterday due to problems with the electricity supply.
A spokesman for the ESB said the loss of supply, which started at about 6am, was due to an underground cable fault as well as problems with overhead wires. Normal service was re-established by about 7pm.
Man's body found at Howth harbour
Gardaí in Howth, Co Dublin, are attempting to establish the identity of a man whose body was discovered at Howth harbour on Wednesday morning. A postmortem has ruled out foul play.
The man was between his late 20s to early 40s. He is 1.77m (5ft 10in), of average build with brown hair. He was wearing navy track suit bottoms with a white stripe, navy shoes with black socks, a blue hooded fleece with the word "Wicked" on the front, and a black and red Guinness fleece.
Man bailed over woman's death
A Nigerian national charged with withholding information in relation to the murder of a Malawian woman in Kilkenny two years ago was remanded on continuing bail yesterday at Letterkenny District Court.
Chijioke Ezekwem (26) Clachan Mór, Windyhall, Letterkenny, was charged with failing to disclose information which was believed to be of assistance in securing a prosecution in relation to the murder of Paiche Onyemaechi (25).
Her badly decomposed body was found on a river bank in Piltown, Co Kilkenny, in July 2004.
Legal argument in murder trial
The trial of a Dublin youth alleged to have beaten a man to death because he was English, went into legal argument at the Central Criminal Court yesterday.
The body of James Burke (20) lay undiscovered for two days in a field where the alleged murder took place, beside the Liffey Valley shopping centre, Clondalkin, Dublin.
Kevin Walsh (17), Allenton Green, Tallaght, denies murdering Mr Burke between September 22nd- 26th, 2005. The trial before Mr Justice O'Sullivan will resume today.
Murder trial jury due to be sworn in
A jury for the trial of two Dublin sisters charged with the murder of a Somalian man, whose dismembered body was found in the Royal Canal last year, is expected to be sworn in on Monday.
Charlotte Mulhall (23) Kilcare Gardens, Tallaght, and Linda Mulhall are due to stand trial at the Central Criminal Court for the murder of Sheilila Salim (38), in Dublin, in March 2005.
