An off-duty Garda sergeant in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, had to be treated in hospital on Monday for bite injuries, following an assault by three minors. He was returning to his parked car when he was alerted to an incident in which a group of youths had been drinking.

They entered the house of an elderly woman and broke a window. They also smashed the windscreen of the sergeant's car. When he went to make an arrest, he was attacked by other youths and bitten on the arms by two girls under the age of 18.

Garda back-up was called and when they arrived, one of them was also bitten.Three young people, one male and two female, were arrested and one was remanded in custody. A file is being compiled for the DPP.

The sergeant was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where he received a tetanus injection and is awaiting blood test results.

Bocelli concerts rescheduled

Italian singer Andrea Bocelli has lost his voice and has postponed concerts scheduled for Galway and Kilkenny this weekend, according to an Aiken Promotions spokeswoman.

She said Bocelli's physician confirmed he was "suffering from an acute laryngo-tracheitis", an inflammation of the larynx and the trachea.

The concerts scheduled for Pearse Stadium, Galway, on Saturday and Nowlan Park, Kilkenny, on Sunday have been rescheduled for July 22nd in Galway and July 23rd in Kilkenny. Tickets for both venues are valid for the new dates but ticket-holders who wish to claim a refund "should contact their point of purchase".

Ó Cuív to open Clare Island pier

A new €9.5 million pier will be officially opened on Clare Island, Co Mayo, today by Éamon Ó Cuív, Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. Mr Ó Cuív will earlier travel to nearby Inishturk where he will officially open an extension to the island pier.

Mizen to Malin charity cycle

Thirty cyclists will today set off from Mizen Head, Co Cork, aiming to arrive at Malin Head, Co Donegal, less than 24 hours later to raise funds for the National Council of the Blind and the Irish Wheelchair Association.

Man struck by ambulance

The Health Service Executive in the midwest has launched an investigation, with the Garda, into an incident on Wednesday night when a man was struck by an ambulance as he crossed a road in Co Limerick. The pedestrian in his 20s sustained head and leg injuries.
