A man's body was recovered from the river Barrow at Murnane Bridge in the centre of Carlow town yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí said a man had been seen "going into the river" earlier. A spokesman said they believed the body was that of "a man in his early 30s from the Ballon area of Co Carlow". He was pronounced dead at the scene. A Garda investigation is under way.

New chairman for Bord na gCon

A new chairman of Bord na gCon was announced by the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism yesterday following the resignation of Paschal Taggart earlier this week.

Dick O'Sullivan, the current manager of Punchestown racecourse, will take up the position vacated by the outgoing chairman Paschal Taggart.

Ex-garda on trespassing charge

A former garda, found guilty of stealing a woman's underwear and posting fliers advertising lewd acts by her in various Waterford inner-city phone booths, has appeared in court charged with trespassing.

Anthony Fennelly (39), Moonvoy Bridge, Tramore, was found guilty of harassment on and between November 12th and 15th, 2003.

He received a three-year suspended jail term on March 2nd. Fennelly appeared at the District Court in Waterford yesterday. It is alleged he trespassed at 22 Suncrest, Clarinwood, Tramore on March 14th 2004. The hearing was adjourned until November 3rd at 2.30pm.

SF councillor faces five charges

A Sinn Féin councillor was charged yesterday with five offences arising out of an incident in West Belfast last month.

Fra McCann (53) was accused of assaulting two police officers, disorderly behaviour, obstructing police and resisting an officer in the execution of his duty.

Mr McCann was remanded on bail for a month.

Three priests to be ordained

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will ordain three priests to the Dublin archdiocese at the Pro-Cathedral tomorrow at 3pm: Pádraig O'Sullivan, Joseph McDonald and Robert Coclough.

Criminal gang members jailed

Three members of a Derry criminal gang, two of them brothers, were jailed yesterday after admitting breaking into and stealing items from farm yards and builders' yards in Co Derry.
