Death of DUP assembly member

The death has occurred after a short illness of East Antrim DUP Assembly member George Dawson. Dr Paisley said last night that "Ulster has lost one of its noble sons".

His death could put back by an hour or so today's Assembly meeting, which was scheduled to start at 10.30am and in which the Northern executive is to be formed. His death could also have a bearing on whether Thursday's first executive meeting will go ahead in the afternoon as planned.

Yachtsmen in Dublin bay rescue

Two yachtsmen who issued a Mayday distress call were rescued by the Dún Laoghaire RNLI lifeboat in Dublin bay yesterday evening. Gale force winds and a strong ebb tide were sweeping the 32-foot yacht Sosumi out to sea. The pair had been sailing the yacht south from Carlingford Lough and hoped to find sheltered conditions in Dublin bay.

However, rough seas and winds gusting above gale force battered the boat near Dún Laoghaire harbour.

Awarded €5,000 by Labour Court

A woman who claimed she was dismissed from her job because she had asthma has been awarded €5,000 by the Labour Court, writes Kitty Holland.

The case, which involved Portroe Stevedores in Dublin and "a worker - represented by Siptu", had been appealed to the court by the union after a rights commissioner had ruled against the worker.

The worker had been approached by the company and asked if she would be interested in a job. She was interviewed in December 2004 and offered the post on a probationary period.

In March 2005 the woman was diagnosed as having had an asthmatic attack, something she suffered from on occasions and was off work for two weeks.

When she returned to work in April the woman was told she would not have been hired if the company had known about the asthma and she was then dismissed.

The company argued she was not dismissed because of her asthma problem but because she could not do the work that she was hired for.
