The 11 crew were trapped on board the ship, the Fortuna I after they were abandoned by their employer. The crew had refused to unload cargo in Greenore, Co Louth, due to a dispute over pay.

The ship was detained in early April by Irish port state control. The Latvian Maritime Agency would not give permission for the vessel to have its registration renewed before requisite repairs were carried out, but the owners did not respond to this and would not pay berthing charges in Greenore.

A young woman was killed instantly when the Jaguar car being driven by her boyfriend crashed at speed through a steel barrier on a busy dual carriageway and flew through the air for 40 yards down a steep embankment before demolishing a concrete wall 70 yards below, Galway Circuit Criminal Court heard yesterday.

Roseanne Connolly, a business management student and recruitment officer, from Barna, was 29 when the accident occurred on April 29th, 2000, and would have celebrated her 37th birthday today had she lived.

The driver of the car, building subcontractor and carpenter, Seán King, of Gortacleva, Claregalway, who was 31 when the accident occurred, pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving causing Ms Connolly's death, at Oranmore, Co Galway.

Judge Raymond Groarke imposed an 18-month suspended sentence and disqualified King from driving for six years.
