The death has occurred of the eldest daughter of former SDLP leader Lord Gerry Fitt.

Joan Hanna, who died on Thursday night, is believed to have suffered a heart attack at her home in Asford, Kent, in England.

Ms Hanna's death follows that of her father, on August 26th at the age of 79. She had nursed him during his illness. Ms Hanna was the eldest of six daughters, one of whom predeceased their parents.

A retired nurse, she had previously worked at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. She was married to the BBC political commentator Vincent Hanna, also from Belfast, who died of a heart attack in 1997 at the age of 58.

Drug-trafficking cash forfeited

Cash totalling over €28,000 which Customs and Excise officers seized at Dublin Airport as the proceeds of drug trafficking, has been forfeited to the Exchequer.

Judge Desmond Hogan made the order at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for forfeiture of £17,865 (€26,240) and €1,900 seized from a couple after hearing evidence that it represented the proceeds of drug trafficking.

Noel Roche (48), of Rutland Avenue, Crumlin, and Teresa O'Callaghan, who is since deceased but was 26 years old at the time and living in Rathdrum Road, Clondalkin, were stopped in the airport on May 29th, 2003, having got off a flight from Amsterdam.

Surgeon entitled to return to hospital

A consultant surgeon can return to work at Cavan General Hospital, the High Court heard yesterday.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) had required William P Joyce, with an address at Derrycramph, Co Cavan to agree to certain conditions before he returned to work after a suspension from the hospital surgical department was lifted by the Minister for Health.

The court was yesterday told the question of preconditions had now been amicably resolved and the HSE wishes it to be known that Mr Joyce is entitled to return to the hospital.

McKevitt appeal set for next month

The appeal by "Real" IRA leader Michael McKevitt against his conviction for directing the activities of a terrorist organisation will be heard by the Court of Criminal Appeal next month.

The court was told yesterday the case will proceed on November 8th and is expected to last for four days. McKevitt (52) Beech Park , Blackrock, Dundalk, Co Louth was jailed for 20 years by the Special Criminal Court for directing the activities of a terrorist organisation.

Stud firm fined over dumping

A stud management company was fined €3,000 yesterday for allowing a lorryload of waste to be dumped at the rear of a Dublin hotel.

Woodpark Stud Management Ltd, Woodpark Stud, Dunboyne, Co Meath, was also ordered to pay €970 court costs for allowing the disposal of waste which might cause pollution and for doing so without a permit on December 13th last.

Dublin District Court heard that a lorry was observed driving into a site at the rear of the Regency Hotel, Whitehall, and dumping around 20 tonnes of demolition waste.
