Man critical after party incident

A man in his mid 20s was in a critical condition in hospital last night after suffering head injuries during an incident at a party in a house in Belmullet, Co Mayo, in the early hours of Saturday.

Gardaí attended a house in College Park, Logmore, shortly before 2am after receiving an emergency call from a male caller. The ambulance service was also contacted and on arrival gardaí were told that a young Polish man had suffered severe head injuries.

The man was taken to Mayo General Hospital, and was then transferred to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, where his condition was described as critical.

Students set unicycling record

A new record for one-wheel transit of Ireland has been set by three Dublin City University engineering students.

David O'Quigley, David McMullan and Shane Conaty rode into Galway city on unicycles on Saturday, having left Dublin last Wednesday.

Their trek was undertaken in aid of several charities, including the Dublin Simon Community, Ballymun Youth Project, and Movning Mountains, a school-building organisation in Kenya.

Killarney body favours royal visit

The main tourism and business organisation in Killarney, has declared its support for a visit by Queen Elizabeth and asked her to include Killarney, so she might retrace the route taken by her grandmother Queen Victoria in 1861.

The statement by the Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism was prompted by the statements last week of Kerry North Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris, opposing a visit by the queen to any part of Ireland.

Chamber spokesman Jerry O'Grady said Killarney would welcome a visit by the queen.

Two hillwalkers rescued

Two hillwalkers were rescued from the Wicklow Mountains in the early hours of yesterday morning after they had failed to arrive back on time to their B&B.

The Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue Team found the hillwalkers at 12.30am along the Inchavore River, close to Lough Dan.

"They were very glad to be found by Mountain Rescue and led back to their B&B," a spokesman said.
