The former senator Dan Kiely was yesterday co-opted on to Kerry County Council to replace Fianna Fáil's Ned O'Sullivan, the councillor from the Listowel area who has been newly elected to the Seanad, writes Anne Lucey.

Cllr Kiely (64), a senator for 15 years, was first elected to the county council in 1979 but lost his seat in the last election.

In a recent radio interview, Cllr Kiely said a lot of people had wronged the late Charles Haughey.

He said he found nothing wrong with businessmen making personal donations to politicians. However, in his political life it had been "the other way around" and people expected him to buy them drinks and so on.

Elderly victim's sister may help

Gardaí are hoping an elderly Co Tipperary woman whose sister was found dead in their home at Borrisoleigh on Friday, may be able to provide crucial information on her sister's movements in the hours leading up to her death.

A postmortem has been carried out on the body of Winnie Ryan.

The dead woman's sister, Mary Ellen, who lived in the same house, was taken to Nenagh Hospital on Friday where she was treated for injuries and shock. Both women were in their 80s. Gardaí said there did not appear to be signs of a break-in at the house but further tests were continuing.

Woman hit by bus dies in hospital

A 77-year-old woman died in hospital yesterday after she was struck by a bus at Dublin Rd, Renmore, Galway on Sunday afternoon. Her death brought to 243 the number of people killed on the Republic's roads since the start of the year. Meanwhile the victim of Sunday's fatal road traffic collision in Ennis, Co Clare was named as Mary McGuane (75) of Ennis. She was struck by a motorbike at about midday.

Gardaí named the 19-year-old man killed in Saturday's collision in Newbridge, Co Kildare, as Sean Devine from Newbridge.

Halifax-Shannon air link on table

Efforts to establish an air link between Shannon and Halifax, Nova Scotia will be discussed at a meeting today writes Pat Flynn.

Nova Scotia minister for tourism, culture and heritage Len Goucher and his department have been investigating the possibility of establishing a direct flight for some time. However, talks last year between Mr Goucher and Aer Lingus "developed into nothing". The minister will meet the Shannon Airport Authority and Shannon Development today.

Inquiry into Cork warehouse fire

Garda forensic experts yesterday continued their examination of the scene of a major blaze in Little Island on the outskirts of Cork city on Sunday night which gutted a warehouse. Damage is estimated at several hundred thousand euro. Twelve people were employed at the warehouse.
