A man was taken into custody yesterday outside Dublin Circuit Criminal Court following an altercation after a Meath resident was acquitted by direction of the judge of sexually assaulting a young woman.

The 23-year-old accused, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, had denied sexually assaulting the complainant on February 11th, 2006, in a Co Meath town.

Judge Patrick McCartan directed the jury to find him not guilty following legal argument in its absence concerning the evidence which was to be offered by the prosecution.

He had ruled earlier that the complainant was not capable of giving evidence of her allegation that the accused had sexually assaulted her in her bed while he attended a house party.

The man taken into custody was a member of the complainant's party and the altercation happened when the accused was leaving the court following his acquittal.

Robbery case sentencing put back

A drug addict who robbed an empty box from Securicor staff making a collection in Blanchardstown three years ago has had his sentence adjourned at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Kieran Counihan, who is currently serving a four-year sentence for transporting guns for a crime gang, held a staff member at gunpoint while robbing the Securicor box which later exploded, emitting red dye.

Counihan (24), of Fassaugh Road, Cabra, pleaded guilty to the robbery of the Securicor box valued at €2,500 outside Quinn Direct, The Q Centre, Blanchardstown, on May 5th, 2004.

Judge Patricia Ryan adjourned sentencing to allow her consider psychiatric reports.

Inquest into men's deaths adjourned

An inquest into the death of a 66-year-old man who died after being attacked by raiders at a north Dublin bakery was adjourned at Dublin City Coroner's Court yesterday as Garda investigations are ongoing, writes Georgina O'Halloran.

Jimmy Louth from Cabra, Dublin, was in a coma for nine weeks after he was attacked by raiders during a robbery on July 3rd, 2006, at Clarke's bakery on the New Cabra Road.

Dublin city coroner Dr Brian Farrell granted Insp Nicolas McGrath of the Bridewell Garda Station a six-month adjournment.

Meanwhile, the coroner also adjourned an inquest into the death of James Donoghue (26) who was stabbed to death in Ballymun on September 10th, 2006, following a row at a 21st birthday, as criminal proceedings are under way.

Court proceedings delay inquest

An inquest into the death of a man who died following an accident at Dublin Airport was yesterday adjourned at Dublin City Coroner's Court as court proceedings are under way.

Patrick Harris (25), from Portmarnock, died at Beaumont Hospital on February 22nd, 2006, following an accident at the airport when he became trapped in a hangar.

Dublin city coroner Dr Brian Farrell granted a six-month adjournment as the Health and Safety Authority is seeking a prosecution under Breach of Statutory Duty.
