A man died after falling from the roof of a house in Co Tyrone yesterday.

The accident happened on Mountjoy Road, just outside Stewartstown, at about 10.30am.

The victim, in his 40s, is believed to have been working on the roof when he fell. A PSNI spokesman said: "The incident will be referred to the Health and Safety Executive." - (PA)

Unions announce agreement

Two of the State's largest unions marked May Day yesterday by announcing their intention to enter into a "co-operation agreement".

Siptu and the ATGWU said their aim was to strengthen the organisation of workers throughout Ireland. "Both unions intend to focus increased resources on assisting all those working in Ireland regardless of their country of origin, and to organise effectively in trade unions under the umbrella of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions to defend and enhance their interests," said a joint statement.

SF councillor opposes festival

A Sinn Féin councillor who is a former Orangeman has opposed Coleraine Borough Council spending £10,000 on a July 12th festival. Cllr Billy Leonard said the event would not be "cross-community". The unionist-controlled council voted through the payment.

Andrews honoured by France

Former minister for foreign affairs and current chairman of the Irish Red Cross David Andrews has been honoured by the French government. He will be installed as a member of the Legion d'Honneur at a ceremony in the French embassy next week.

The honour is being bestowed in recognition of his work in strengthening the relationship between Ireland and France and for his contribution in the humanitarian field.

Arthur Guinness signature dropped

Arthur Guinness's signature is to be dropped from the Guinness logo on cans and bottles sold in the US under a makeover to make stout more appealing to younger drinkers.
