Carlow Institute of Technology is offering a number of new sports scholarships for students entering the college through the Central Applications Office in September. The scholarships will be offered for the academic year 1999-2000.

They will be for Gaelic games, soccer and rugby. "The hope is to expand the number of scholarships on offer and the different kinds of sports represented over time," according to Mr David Curtin of Carr Communications. The scholarships should help students with the cost of training while leaving them free to pursue academic qualifications.

Mr John Gallagher, director of the Institute of Technology, Carlow, said: "The scholarships will be offered to young sports-persons of exceptional ability and potential."
