Gardaí investigating the discovery of a man’s body in a suitcase at the weekend have contacted Interpol in an effort to identify him.

A search of missing persons' reports in Ireland has failed to provide any clues as to the victim’s identity.

The large black suitcase was found in the Royal Canal on Friday night at Binn's Bridge, Drumcondra, Dublin.

A post-mortem showed the man died from head injuries. Gardaí say his hands were not tied and the body was not multilated.

The victim was about five feet 10 inches, sturdily built and was wearing beige corduroy trousers, a black V-neck jumper shirt and a brown leather jacket. He was not carrying any documentation indicating his identity.

Gardaí say they believe the body may have been in the water for up to three weeks.
