Investigation after man dies in cell

A Garda Ombudsman investigation was launched yesterday after a man died in a Garda cell.

A Garda Ombudsman investigation was launched yesterday after a man died in a Garda cell.

The eastern European man was found in an intoxicated state near the Marshes shopping centre in Dundalk at around 7pm on Monday night.

Gardaí arrested him under Section 4 of the Public Order Act and took him to the local station. Soon afterwards he was discovered unwell on the floor of his cell.

The man was taken by ambulance to Louth County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after 9pm. A spokesman for the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) said he will not be named until next-of-kin have been informed.
