An Iranian state television station today said a plane that was forced to land in Iran was Hungarian, not a US military plane as reported earlier by a semi-official Iranian news agency.

Iran's Arabic-language al-Alam satellite station, citing a military source, also said there had been no  US military officials on board, as it had earlier reported.

Earlier today, the Fars News Agency said  that five senior US military officials had been interrogated at an Iranian airport and released a day later after it became clear the US plane had not entered intentionally.

"After it became clear that they unintentionally entered Iran's air space and their destination was Afghanistan, they were allowed to leave Iran for Afghanistan," Fars said.

In Washington, the Pentagon said it was unaware of any US warplanes being forced to land in Iran and that all US aricraft in the Gulf region were accounted for.
