A senior Iraqi member of parliament dismissed as "lies" evidence presented on today by US Secretary of State Colin Powell to the UN Security Council on alleged Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.

"These are lies and fabrications which have no material proof. They are aimed at creating a pretext for military aggression against Iraq," Mr Salem al-Kubaisi, head of Arab and foreign relations committee at Iraq's national assembly said.

Iraq denies possessing banned weapons and has challenged Washington saying it is not interested in disarming Iraq but in gaining control of its oil riches.
