A US-backed Iraqi opposition group said its militants had shot and wounded the influential younger son of President Saddam Hussein during an ambush earlier this month.

The Arabic-language Asharq al-Awsatquoted the London-based

Iraqi National Congress (INC) as saying in a statement that Qusay, who controls the elite Republican Guard, was wounded in the arm when a gunman shot at his motorcade in one of Baghdad's plush neighbourhoods on August 1st.

It said Iraqi security forces clashed with the fleeing attackers and destroyed their car.

There was no independent confirmation of the report, which was carried by the London-based al-Hayatnewspaper as well.

Qusay, who was born in 1966, has fewer public roles than his his flamboyant older brother Uday, who runs several newspapers, as well as television and radio stations.
