The Iraqi Special Tribunal that will put Saddam Hussein on trial released a video today of the former dictator and four of his officials being questioned by magistrates.
The video showed a bearded Saddam - wearing a dark-coloured jacket and white open-collared shirt - being questioned by a man in the dark robes of a judge. It was unclear when the video was made.
An announcement accompanying the tape said Saddam was being questioned about crimes related to the execution of at least 50 Iraqis in 1982 in the Shia town of Dujail, 50 miles north of Baghdad, in retaliation for a failed assassination attempt against him.
A senior US diplomat has survived a suicide car bomb attack on a US military convoy in Baghdad.
A spokesman for the Iraqi Islamic Party, a major Sunni Muslim grouping, said a senior US official had just left its compound in western Baghdad when the explosion went off.
But it was not clear if the diplomat was specifically the target, and a US embassy spokesman said he was unaware of the attack.
