Ireland is predicted to breach its annual obligations under an EU 2020 target for a 20 per cent cut in greenhouse gas emissions from 2016 onwards unless the Government takes stronger policy measures.
The Environmental Protection Agency said yesterday that even in the “best-case scenario” the State would overshoot the EU target by between 4.1 million and 8.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide or equivalent. It confirmed that Ireland would be able to meet its targets under the Kyoto Protocol.
