The games are the largest European gathering of dialysed and transplanted people, with just under 400 athletes.

Representing Ireland at the games were 22 athletes who have received organ transplants, including four kidney, heart or liver, and four who are undergoing dialysis.

Ranging in age from 24 to 65, the Irish team of 10 women and 16 men competed under various age categories in a variety of sporting events including track and field, swimming, cycling, bowling, darts, volleyball, tennis, table-tennis and badminton.

Irish team manager Colin White said: "Our Irish team has had an unforgettable experience at the games and aside from our tremendous performance in sporting events we have enjoyed the comradeship with people from all over Europe who all have one thing in common, maintaining a positive spirit after organ failure and striving to maintain a healthy lifestyle and level of fitness which has allowed them to participate on an international stage."

He said they hoped the games would help heighten awareness about organ donation.

The Irish Kidney Association (IKA) is responsible for the co-ordination of Ireland's participation at the games.
