Design ideas for making the best use of panelling

This open tread Portland stone staircase is in a refurbished villa in Chepstow, London, and was made by the UK-based Stone Masonry Company for award-winning architecture firm Michaelis Boyd. It descends from entry level to garden level alongside Jacobean-inspired panelling that has been painted Stiffkey Blue by Farrow & Ball. Blacksheep design company dressed this outpost of Brasserie Blanc in Farrow & Ball railings and positioned the mushroom-coloured leather banquettes against them to draw the eye up to the room’s period-style panelling, simple timber moulding glued and nailed to the wall. Mirrors are positioned to bookend each picture frame panel to draw light into the room and to help diners people-watch and miss none of the action at the other booths. blacksheep.uk.com

A restful grey in a bedroom forms a really good base onto which you can layer other shades – in this instance splashes of colour include mustard yellow and monochrome chevron-striped rugs. Scree 227 is the Little Greene paint colour on the arts and crafts-inspired panelling, creating the illusion of height. Colouring the floor, ceiling and above the panelling in the same paler grey, Shallows 223, helps to make the Scandinavian bare wood furniture stand out. The dining-room in this traditional Tudor-style home in Toronto has its period wainscoting painted in Farrow & Ball Stone Blue, a grey-tone shade that brings a fashion feel to the heritage home. Sara Bederman Design added decorative wainscoting below and a metallic smoked oyster wallpaper above.
