The body of a woman in her early 80s discovered by gardaí on Friday is thought to have lain undiscovered for a number of months.

Bridget Crosbie's body was found by gardaí at The Faythe in Wexford town at approximately 9.30pm on Friday night.

The body was removed to University Hospital Waterford, where a postmortem will be carried out.

It’s understood the woman’s death is not being treated as suspicious but the outcome of the postmortem will determine the direction of the investigation.

Age Action spokesman Justin Moran said the circumstances surrounding the death of Ms Crosbie was “a reminder” for the public to check in on neighbours who may be socially isolated.

“What happened to Bridget Crosbie is desperately sad and our thoughts are with her family,” he said.

“We would urge people to check in on their older neighbours, particularly if they’re living alone or far from their families.

“Reaching out like that is a really welcome gesture and it can be important to people who might be socially isolated.”
