Boy (13) dies following single vehicle crash in Co Wicklow

Driver of car that drove into ditch near Annamoe arrested on suspicion of drink driving

A 13-year-old boy has died following a car crash in Co Wicklow on Saturday morning.

The crash occurred near Annamoe before 6.40am on Saturday when the vehicle in which the boy was a passenger hit a ditch.

Following the crash the driver and the boy proceeded to walk on the road towards Roundwood from Annamoe before being offered a lift by a passerby.

The young boy’s condition deteriorated and he died on route to Loughlinstown Hospital. A postmortem was scheduled to take place Saturday afternoon.

The driver of the car, aged in his 30’s, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and brought to Wicklow Garda station. He is scheduled to appear before Bray District Court on Saturday afternoon at 2pm.

The road between Roundwood and Annamoe was currently closed for an examination by Garda Forensic Collision investigators and local diversions were put in place.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who travelled this road prior to 6.40am on Saturday in either direction and who may have seen the collision or observed or passed the two males walking the road to contact them at Wicklow on 0404 – 60140, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
