The Aga Khan cup has been won by Britain at the Dublin Horse Show in the RDS.

It is the 26th time Britain has won the trophy in the Nations’ Cup competition.

Ireland won the cup last year for the first time in eight years under the stewardship of chef d'equipe Robert Splaine and it had been hoped that the team would retain the title.

Instead it shared third place with the US team. The Dutch team took second place.

Eight nations competed in the Dublin leg of the Nations Cup this afternoon.

President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina were guests of honour at the packed main arena in the RDS.

Eight teams took part in today's competition: Germany, the Netherlands, Ukraine, USA, Britain, France, Spain and Ireland.

Splaine named his team last night choosing Dermott Lennon on Loughview Lou Lou to start the Irish challenge, followed by Shane Breen on Balloon, Conor Swail on Lansdowne and Cian O'Connor on Blue Loyd.

This is the third day of the Dublin Horse Show which finishes on Sunday. Fine weather brought out the crowds on the first two days and visitors have been filing into the RDS showgrounds since early morning today.
